Effect of ion back flow in the HYDRA time projection chambers at high rates

Bachelor Thesis

The hypernuclei program at R3B at GSI/FAIR aims at producing light hypernuclei from relativistic light ion collisions and perform their missing mass spectroscopy from their mesonic decay. The experimental setup relies on the detection of decay pions with the HYDRA time projection chamber inside the GLAD dipole magnet. In this Bachelor thesis, realistic simulations of charged particles through the TPC will be performed. The effects of ion back flow (ions from amplification returning in the active volume of the detector) on the electric field inside the active volume of the TPC will be simulated. The impact on the tracking and momentum resolution will be estimated. A method to correct from the ion-back flow will be developed and implemented in the analysis code.
