Our new publication entitled “An improved value for the hyperfine splitting of hydrogen-like 209Bi82+” appeared in J. Phys. B and presents the most accurate measurement of a hyperfine transition in a heavy hydrogen-like ion that has so far been accomplished. We could improve the accuracy of previous measurments, which were also performed at the storage ring ESR at GSI Darmstadt, by more than an order of magnitude. Precise measurements of the electron coolers acceleration voltage of 214,000 V with a high-voltage divider from PTB have been a key element in this experiment. The result – combined with the measurement of the Li-like ion that is still under analysis – will provide a test of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) in the strongest electromagnetic fields available in the laboratory.
