A new process for the synthesis of rare nuclei in the Universe?

2024/05/07

Scientists from the SFB 1245 with colleagues from GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung and the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, proposed a new nucleosynthesis process denoted the νr-process. It operates when neutron-rich material is exposed to a high flux of neutrinos.

The theoretical proposal, published in Physical Review Letters with an “Editors Suggestion” and a “Featured in Physics”, may solve a long-standing issue related to producing a group of rare isotopes present in the solar system, whose origin is still poorly understood, the so-called p-nuclei.
