Our research group is playing a leading role in the present PreSPEC experimental campaign at the fragment separator (FRS) at GSI which is an important stage of development for the future FAIR experiment HiSPEC (High- resolution In-flight SPECtroscopy). Embedded in the scientific programme of the international NuSTAR collaboration, HiSPEC will give significant impulses for nuclear structure research from gamma spectroscopy of very exotic nuclei. In PreSPEC and later in HiSPEC the ions of interest will be produced among others in a fragmentation or fission reaction and selected at velocities up to 50% of the speed of light with the help of a fragment separator (In-Flight- Method). These highly energetic ions will induce a secondary reaction on a fixed target to give access to relevant nuclear structure observables using gamma- and particle spectroscopy. HiSPEC is one of the very first experiments which will benefit from the superior ion beams produced in the new fragment separator Super-FRS and will therefore contribute to the first results of FAIR.

The key element of HiSPEC will be the state-of-the-art 4pi gamma spectrometer AGATA consisting of up to 160 cluster detectors each made of three 36fold electrically segmented HPGe crystals. A smaller device named AGATA- Demonstrator is already used in the PreSPEC campaign. The scientific programme of PreSPEC and HiSPEC is focused on the following nuclear structure phenomena: the evolution and modification of the nuclear shell structure with increasing neutron excess, the breakdown of the isospin symmetry, the limits of stability at the drip lines, collective phenomena in unknown mass regions and transition probabilities in very exotic nuclei.
