Magnetic moment and quadrupole moment of Fe-53 published

2017/11/17

The measurement of the magnetic dipole moment and the electric quadrupole moment of Fe-53 has been published in Physical Review C. The measurements were performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory NSCL with the BECOLA beamline, which has once more demonstrated its large potential for measurements on exotic isotopes. Fe-53 is the first iron isotope for which the spectroscopic quadrupole moment of the nuclear ground state could be determined since the stable odd isotope Fe-57 has nuclear spin I=1/2 and therefore no quadrupole moment. The results for the magnetic moment have been used to predict the nuclear magnetic moment of the mirror nucleus Co-53. The work has been supported by our Collaborative Research Centre SFB 1245.
