TU Researchers publish study on triaxial structures

Laser Spectroscopy can be used to determine the relative size of different atomic nuclei of the same element by measuring tiny changes in their atomic spectra. We set up a novel apparatus for such experiments at Argonne National Laboratory and were able to reach outstanding sensitivity. These new developments allowed us to investigate the size of a series of radioactive ruthenium nuclei, which are known to be triaxial in shape: Similar to a coffee bean or an almond, all three axes have a different proportion.

Our measurement of the hyperfine structure of the radioactive isotope Bi-208 in the storage ring of the ESR was recognized with a “News and Views” article in Nature Physics.

Our measurements of the charge radius of the carbon isotope C-13 at COALA have been published in Nature Communications . The results obtained by us and our colleagues in theory were highlighted in a press release by TU Darmstadt (idw news) (only in German).

Our paper “A Setup to Study Atomic State Population Dynamics and Optical Polarization at CRYRING@ESR” has been published in the Journal of Instrumentation as an open-access article.
