New data for further investigations of the hyperfine Puzzle published

2018/02/28

The graph has been taken from the paper and shows the hyperfine structure of Bi-208.

Our article about the improved measurement of the magnetic moment of Bi-208 with the COLLAPS experiment at ISOLDE/CERN appeared in Physics Letters B. From the results we have also predicted the hyperfine structure splittings in hydrogen-like and lithium-like bismuth as well as the so-called specific difference of the two hyperfine structure splittings. It will be the fundament for further tests of bound-state strong-field QED using laser spectroscopy at the experimental storage ring ESR at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt. This will be an important piece of the solution of the “hyperfine puzzle”.
