Pilot Experiment on Helium-like Boron published

2023/01/11

In the recent past, the theoretical description of light helium-like systems via non-relativistic QED (NR-QED) has made enormous progress. As a result, the all-optical determination of charge radii via a joint experimental and theoretical evaluation is within reach.
In a pilot experiment at the HITRAP facility at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, we demonstrated that the metastable 2s2 3S1 state in 11B3+ is sufficiently populated for collinear laser spectroscopy after production in an electron beam ion source (EBIS).
Our results (s. Figure) are in good agreement with previous measurements and were published open-access in the Atoms journal on Jan. 11. Further experiments on helium-like systems at the COALA beamline are currently ongoing.
