International Graduate School (IRTG 2891) Nuclear Photonics

Welcome

to the webpages of the International Graduate School (GRK 2891) Nuclear Photonics.

Nuclear photonics deals with the study and exploitation of photon-induced phenomena at the nuclear-physical energy scale, and is a rapidly developing international interdisciplinary field of research due to recent developments in high-power lasers (Physics Nobel Prizes 2018). It involves the generation of brilliant particle beams with high-power lasers, fundamental research in nuclear physics with photonuclear reactions, and the development of new techniques and methods for their use.

We are happy and proud that our international research training group 'Nuclear Photonics' has been selected for financial support. We are screening the communities for appropriate candidates for PhD research in Nuclear Photonics. Basic information on the application procedure is provided in this flyer (opens in new tab) .

Further information on research projects can be found in this document (opens in new tab) .

Final Program (opens in new tab)

This years Annual Workshop of our IRTG 2891 “Nuclear Photonics” was held from 29 October to 1 November 2024 at our partners facility ELI-Beamlines in Dolní Břežany (close to Prague) in the Czech Republic. The scientific contributions from invited speakers including local scientists from ELI-Beamlines and from early career researchers, addressed fundamental questions in photonuclear and laser-plasma physics, covering topics such as the development of novel laser-driven radiation sources, the scientific exploitation of MeV-range photon beams, and the advancement of methodology and instrumentation for nuclear photonics.

A series of lectures on laser-plasma interactions by experts in the field, covering both theoretical and experimental perspectives

The first joint event of the two participating partner universities, the Technische Universität Darmstadt and the National University for Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest, took place from 27.11.23 to 29.11.23 as part of an official kick-off event followed by a lecture week at the TU Darmstadt in the Wilhelm-Köhler-Saal.

The event was opened by greetings from the Vice President for Research, Prof. Matthias Oechsner, the Dean of the Faculty of Physics, Prof. Regine von Klitzing, and the spokespersons of IRTG 2891, Prof. Norbert Pietralla and Dr. Calin Ur.

The Alexander von Humboldt awardee Prof. Takaharu Otsuka (University of Tokyo) gave the keynote speech on “New Concepts of Nuclear Structure Science”.

The following program consisted of a series of lectures by Prof. Pietralla on “Photonuclear Reactions” and more than 14 presentations of research work by Early Career Researchers of the IRTG 2891 from Darmstadt and Bucharest.

The event was rounded off with presentations and discussions on the principles of Good Scientific Practice and Research Data Management.
